Timeless & Surreal

Gucci launches a new collaborative project based around the Swiss-made G-Timeless watch, with illustrations by international artists that celebrate the automatic watch’s designs, with indexes in the form of bees.

Gucci has pioneered several collaborative projects, sharing its vision in the digital space. Now, House Creative Director Alessandro Michele has invited a number of visual artists from around the world to bring their personal and idiosyncratic perspectives to bear on the G-Timeless automatic watch.

Alessandro Michele asked different visual artists (illustrators, painters and digital artists) from around the world to indulge their imaginations and create artworks featuring various models of G-Timeless automatic watches. They were all challenged to interpret the watches creatively and in their own way, and to focus in particular on the element that makes the G-Timeless so distinctive: the motif of the bee, first introduced to Gucci in the 1970s, which is the key decorative feature on the stone dials of these timepieces, where it functions as every hour-marking index.

The artists truly represent the global community. While some, like Winnie Chi from China and Kieron Livingstone from the UK, have previously collaborated with Gucci, most are new discoveries for the Maison: like London-based Oh de Laval and Tishk Barzanji, Balfua from California, David Macho from Spain and Andrey Kasay from Russia. Other artists include the USA’s Margot Ferrick and UK’s Cambo, who have already had their artworks for this project previewed on Gucci’s Instagram as a teaser, together with Winnie Chi, who has presented an animation. Although each artist has brought a deeply personal eye to the project, all the pieces share a dreamy, surreal mood, perfectly in keeping with Gucci’s eclecticism.

“William Blake’s painting, poetry, romanticism, and mysticism have been a constant source of inspiration for me in my art and life,” says Cambo about his artworks featuring ‘A busy bee has no time for sorrow’ – a playful twist on Blake’s poem – combined with the Gucci G-Timeless timepieces. Artist Margot Ferrick has drawn the quirky image of a person-like sinuous-necked swan: “The swan people are something I've been trying to draw for years,” she says. “I'm also generally into old computers and keyboards, as well as space stations and machinery so I tried to incorporate these interests.”

The Gucci G-Timeless watch features a stone dial decorated with the House’s famous bees, while the transparent case back gives a glimpse of the automatic movement that powers the timepieces.

There are eight Swiss-made variations of the G-Timeless in all, with a 38mm or a 42mm case. Three models combine an 18kt yellow gold case with a black onyx, brown tiger eye, or green malachite stone dial.

Five further variants combine a steel case with a blue lapis stone dial or a black onyx stone dial.

Lifestyle Insider is a kind of junction point, connecting people with diverse interests that touch on the more luxurious aspects of lifestyle – fashion, design, travel, food and spirits, art, watches and jewellery, cars, yachts, and aviation, and technology. People today don’t fit into boxes and categories. In our individual ways, we are interested in diverse themes, products, and the challenges that face our world today. You will judge how well this effort of mine caters to your passions and proclivities.

Lifestyle Insider is a showcase of all that is beautiful and luxe. Behind every creation, is a designer, chef, entrepreneur, or a design maison. I have delved into my own appreciation for objetsde luxe that I have admired over the years – be it a love of fashion from the world’s top Parisian and Italian fashion maisons and their ’90s muses, or the care that goes into sari and Indian textile collections in my own family. Growing up on four continents, as the daughter of a former Indian Ambassador, I’ve seen a remarkable array of historic places and met a myriad people. My aim is to bring my world view into this website, a curation of what I find particularly stunning, unique, and newsworthy.

It’s an exciting time for brands all over the world. With change comes opportunity. With the global ‘reset’ and uncertainty on many fronts, there is a chance to write a new script. Let’s be those pioneers.

A bit about me:
A luxury and fashion journalist with 25 years of experience in publishing and magazine journalism, I have edited some of India’s top fashion and luxury magazines. I got my BA in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley, and went on to receive my Master’s in English and French from the University of Strasbourg, France. I have also studied German and Film. I live in Gurugram, India, and look forward to once again exploring our world with a new-found freedom.
