Donatella Versace looked to the American Gold Rush and Gilded Age of the 1800s for her Met Gala outfit. The custom Atelier Versace tulle bustier is inspired by corsetry of the Gilded Age and finished with frayed denim details which extend to the skirt. An embroidery finish of frayed denim, Swarovski gold crystals, gold-leather, and chains, are in reference to the California Gold Rush era.

Cardi B's Met Gala outfit was a high-voltage take on Gilded Age high-glamour. Atelier Versace embroidered a mile of golden metal chains above an illusion tulle column dress in a hand-craft process that took 20 members of the Atelier 1,300 hours to complete. Medusa medallions and the Versace Greca embellished in crystal decorate the chains, visually recalling coins in an abundance of glamour. The intricate embroidery features are also on the arms and neckline, with a hand-sculpted chain collar that plays into the traditional image of a Victorian coat ruff. The full design seemingly gilds Cardi herself, a deserved indulgence for the artist whose debut album was certified gold on the exact day of its release on April 6, 2018.

Blake Lively celebrated New York architecture and artistry with her Met Gala 2022 look.
Arriving on the red carpet in a custom Atelier Versace tulle column dress embroidered with crystal, metallic leather, paillette, and tri-tone copper foil duchesse, an oversized foiled bow at the waist unravelled to reveal a second look in Verdigris patina – mirroring the transformation of New York's Statue of Liberty from bronze to oxidized green. The long duchesse train features a hand painted, foiled, and embroidered celestial map inspired by the 12 zodiac constellations decorating the ceiling of Grand Central Station. The original shape of the dress draws inspiration from American designer, Charles James, while art deco shapes recall New York landmarks like the Empire State building. Olivia Rodrigo. Getty Images
Olivia Rodrigo referenced Gilded Age elegance with her custom Atelier Versace dress at the Met Gala. Inspired by the Gilded Age's reflection of opulence, the column dress is crafted entirely from hand-embroidered metal crystal mesh in a spring lavender tone. The design features a cowl neckline and an intricate rear corset with crystalized boning against nude tulle, emphasizing the era's attention to enhancing the female form. Draped shoulder detailing and a leg slit complete the look.

Dwyane Wade wore a custom Atelier Versace suit to the Met Gala. A contemporary reimagining of Gilded Age elegance, the slightly oversized jacket and matching tailored pants are crafted from white heavy satin, and is worn shirtless. The number 75 is embroidered to the sleeve in celebration of Wade's selection to the NBA 75th anniversary team.
Gabrielle Union-Wade attended this year's Met Gala in a custom Atelier Versace gown that gave tribute to the changing roles of women and the emerging Black activism which occurred during the Gilded Age. The dress is crafted in hand-linked metal crystal mesh with a plunging neckline and snatched waist, and features a platinum satin-effect lurex train topped with duchesse and a degradé of silk and hand-embroidered crystal flowers. An embroidered red flower at the waist pays direct homage to a gown worn by Diahann Carroll – a women’s rights activist and first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Gigi Hadid Getty Images
Gigi Hadid attended the Met Gala in an Atelier Versace custom puffer coat worn over a corset catsuit, in a modern interpretation of coats from the late 1800s and a refresh of the Dollman silhouette for a new age of glamour. Crafted in a deep jewel-toned burgundy silk duchesse, the oversized opera coat features a degradé quilted finish and is worn over a latex catsuit with boned corset and Atelier Versace pointed neckline. The corset and the overexaggerated volume of the jacket confront each other in a decadent display of contrast inspired by the volume and dramatic change in womenswear silhouettes of late 1800s.

Lena Waithe wore a custom Atelier Versace ensemble inspired by American Southwestern flair and turn-of-the-century men's tailoring to this year's Met Gala. A long jacket with open back and narrow lapels in reference to the style of late-1800s America, and a pair of wide-leg palazzo pants, are crafted from turquoise duchesse, with the coat featuring hand-embroidered stud and crystal details in reference to the glitz of the Gilded Age. The look is completed with an embroidered tulle long-sleeve t-shirt with a see-through effect finishing.
Lily James. Getty Images
Lily James wore a custom Atelier Versace dress that captured the unabashed glamour, excess, and aspirational elegance of the Gilded Age to the annual Met Gala. A nude tulle illusion dress is covered entirely in strings of pearls in reference to their representation of royalty, decadence, and the gaining of new feminine freedoms during the Gilded Age. Each pearl is hand-embroidered and modernized in a metallic dusty blue coating. The design features asymmetric lines, a common design feature of the era, an open back with further pearl embellishments, and a keyhole cut-out neckline.

Cole Sprouse channelled the excesses and stardom of the Gilded Age with his custom Atelier Versace outfit for the Met Gala. Suiting is modernized in a contemporary retelling of the changing suit aesthetic of the late 1800s. A slim-fit blazer in silver duchesse is accompanied by a metal mesh tank top – a style in reference to the top worn by iconic musician Prince in a Versace photoshoot of the 1990s. A fun play on a turn-of-the-century three-piece suit, a gilet is finished with embroidered paillettes and crystals, which also feature as side bands along the length of the tailored tuxedo pants.

Blake Lively
Blake Lively’s look was inspired by warm-toned metals and coppers starting with a bronzed contour on the skin. Her eyes were washed with a combination of matte browns for structure and metallic rose golds and coppers to play off her Versace gown. “Kate Moss’s look was all about glowing, gilded Hollywood skin with a bronzed, sun-kissed contour using Charlotte’s Beautiful Skin Foundation, Hollywood Contour Wand (in Medium/Deep) and Beauty Light Wand (in Spotlight and Goldasm). I softly defined her eyes with a brown feline flick, and we decided to go bold on the lips to match the femme fatale aesthetic of her Burberry trench gown by painting on a cool-toned red with the Hot Lips (Matte Revolution) Lipstick in Carina’s Love. I am obsessed with how the classic glamour of this look came together with a pop of fresh, modern red for confident colour!” – Makeup by Sofia Tilbury.
