Flashback to California in the 1980s and I recall from memory – every junior or senior in my public high school in San Francisco who ever wanted to be one of the ‘cool kids’ sported an adidas Original A-ZX on his or her feet at some point in their scholastic life. From the Skaters to the Preppies and the Jocks, it was a must-have, with those three unmistakable stripes that set you apart from the ‘lame’ crowd. It was the first time that a running shoe had transitioned into mainstream, young fashion, and this was a trend that would forever alter the way sneakers would be worn henceforth. The guys at adidas had struck gold, and they knew it.
adidas Originals A-ZX RETRO, from the backFlash forward to today. ‘Retro’ is in vogue, and is not likely to fade anytime soon. It’s the perfect time for Germany-headquartered adidas to bring back this iconic design, by dipping into its archives, by re-releasing the ZX-1000C model from the late 1980s, with the same colour scheme as the original. And as the brand gears up for 26 drops over the next two years (something it had done in 2008-2009), from its A-ZX series, starting with R (for RETRO), it hints at taking inspiration from the Periodic Table of Elements. And who didn’t have to learn this at school?
adidas Originals A-ZX Series is inspired by the Periodic TableSo what does the new re-released sneaker look like? A white dual material upper pairing synthetic suede and nylon mesh is complemented by details executed in black and the typical adidas Originals blue for the three stripes, the heel and the toe box. The vintage look is brought to the next level by the cream-white outsole, the pastel yellow execution of the Torsion system and the iconic lime green Torsion lacelock. Looking into the past, the adidas Originals ZX 1000C RETRO sneaker sets its footprint at the starting block of the A-ZX Series.

Lifestyle Insider is a showcase of all that is beautiful and luxe. Behind every creation, is a designer, chef, entrepreneur, or a design maison. I have delved into my own appreciation for objetsde luxe that I have admired over the years – be it a love of fashion from the world’s top Parisian and Italian fashion maisons and their ’90s muses, or the care that goes into sari and Indian textile collections in my own family. Growing up on four continents, as the daughter of a former Indian Ambassador, I’ve seen a remarkable array of historic places and met a myriad people. My aim is to bring my world view into this website, a curation of what I find particularly stunning, unique, and newsworthy.
It’s an exciting time for brands all over the world. With change comes opportunity. With the global ‘reset’ and uncertainty on many fronts, there is a chance to write a new script. Let’s be those pioneers.
